Andrew David Lytle, a native of Ohio and journeyman photographer, came through Baton Rouge while traveling the South as an itinerant photographer. Lytle settled in Baton Rouge in 1860, established his photographic studio on Main Street, and began what would turn out to be more than fifty years of photographing the life and times of this small river city. Centenary College of Louisiana was an undergraduate college in Jackson, Louisiana. It was formed in the 1840s from a merger of the College of Louisiana in Jackson (established 1825) and Centenary College. Judge Edward McGehee (1786-1880), a planter and businessman of Wilkinson County, Mississippi, was instrumental in the founding of the college. Murphy J. Foster was an attorney, Louisiana state senator (1880-1892), Governor of Louisiana (1892-1900), and United States Senator (1900-1912). He studied law at the University of Louisiana, now Tulane University, and passed the state bar exam in 1871. Foster was briefly married to Florence Daisy Hine, then remarried 1881 to Rose Routh Ker, daughter of John Ker and Rose Routh of Ouida Plantation in West Feliciana Parish.
